foreverhost.ing
Static archive hosting. Ten years. $150
You have...
old client sites you can't kill
They earn nothing. They still nag you for updates, collect spam, and every unpatched plugin on them is your liability rather than the client's. Taking one down means a conversation you don't want to have; leaving it up means babysitting it forever.
We convert them to plain files · no database, no plugins, nothing to patch · and keep each one online for ten years. Then you cancel the hosting · the domain is the only bill left, and it's the client's, not yours. Bring us several at once and we'll price them as a batch, white-label if you want it.
a project site that outlived the project that funded it
The funding period closed years ago. The sustainability plan said the site would stay available, and it does · because one person keeps remembering to renew things, unpaid.
One fixed payment per site is the cheapest preservation plan you can actually write into a budget, and it outlasts whoever wrote it. Ask us for the budget language; we'll send wording that fits a sustainability or preservation line item.
an exhibition site nobody has touched since the show closed
Every show, residency and program leaves a site behind, and the CMS underneath it keeps aging whether or not anyone visits. The Internet Archive might catch it, but its snapshots are best-effort · images that load through scripts quietly go missing, and whatever it saved is frozen and yours to live with. We take a complete copy while the original still works and keep it whole for ten years.
This keeps the site live where people are already looking, on one payment instead of a line in next year's budget. If you have a dozen of them, ask about consortium pricing.
a portfolio piece living on someone else's server
Your best work is online only while someone else keeps paying for it. When they stop, the link in your portfolio returns a 404 and the proof goes with it. Screenshots are not the same as a site somebody can click through.
Take a copy while the original is still up, keep it online independently of the client's server, and stop depending on their hosting. Your domain stays yours.
an organization winding down, and a record worth keeping
You want to close cleanly, not disappear. The programs, the reports, the names of everyone involved · that record should outlast the bank account, and after the final board meeting there is nobody left to pay a monthly bill.
One payment out of the closing budget keeps it readable for a decade, and you keep a complete copy of the whole thing yourself, which works with no server and without us.
a site that's already gone
If the server is dead, pieces of the site may still exist: the Wayback Machine, old backups, caches, wherever copies landed. We can't promise recovery, and we won't. What we offer first is a survey: we search everything that might hold a piece and send you a list of what survives, page by page, with where each piece came from. If enough survives to be worth keeping, we rebuild it into an archive that notes the provenance of every recovered page.
Pick the one that's yours.
Hosting keeps a site online. Archiving makes it a record. Every job starts the same way, as plain files kept for ten years, and some sites deserve more: rebuilding what already went down, or indexing what's worth studying. The survey tells us which yours is.
WHAT IT COSTS
- $150 · one site, ten years, conversion included (static, Indexhibit, small WordPress)
- Custom · reach out. we'll talk
- The domain is separate · keep renewing yours to stay at your address, or use a foreverhost.ing one at no cost. The $150 is the hosting.
HOW IT GOES
- We crawl the site, work out what it runs on, count the pages.
- You get a quote and a list: every URL, every interactive feature, what happens to it.
- We mirror it to plain files and check it page by page against the original while the original is still up.
- You approve, page by page. Nothing goes live and no DNS changes until you say so.
- It's online for ten years. Cancel the old hosting that week · you keep the domain.
WHAT STOPS WORKING
- Forms, sign-ups and comment boxes stay visible. Submitting one says the site is archived.
- Search, logins, carts, analytics, chat and ad tags are removed. Nothing phones home.
- Embeds you don't own · maps, video, feeds · break on their owner's schedule. The page around them is kept.
WHAT GETS BETTER
- Flash plays again. An emulator ships inside the archive, so it needs no plugin and works on a phone.
- Images only reachable through scripts get found and kept.
- Files an old server was serving wrongly get fixed.
- Old links keep resolving. Legacy URLs redirect to their archived pages.
- HTTPS and a global CDN, on a site from 2001.
IF WE GO AWAY
- You hold a complete copy of the archive from day one. It works with no server and without us.
- If we shut down, every archive is published publicly and you get at least ninety days' notice. It's in the terms.
